The city of La Harbor has successfully completed its second anonymous gun buyback program, continuing its efforts to reduce gun violence and remove firearms from the streets. The initiative, which took place in May, follows a similar program held in October 2022, and has seen significant participation from the local community.
During the program, residents were encouraged to turn in unwanted firearms without revealing their identities. Participants drove to designated locations where police officers, trained in weapon handling, ensured the safe collection and evaluation of the firearms. The program offered gift cards as incentives for those who surrendered their weapons, with careful selection of vendors to ensure that they did not sell firearms.
In total, the two buyback events resulted in the collection of 757 firearms, including 57 assault weapons. The program aims not only to take guns off the streets but also to promote community safety by providing a secure and anonymous way for individuals to dispose of firearms they no longer wish to keep.
Officials emphasized the importance of the program in fostering a safer environment, highlighting that participants were not required to surrender all their weapons, but only those they deemed disposable. The initiative reflects a broader commitment to addressing gun violence and enhancing public safety in the region.
