Community leader demands action to protect historic Native lands

During a recent government meeting, community member Lauren Cassandra Woods raised significant concerns regarding the preservation of historic sites in downtown Jacksonville, particularly those related to the Abyssinian tribe, the third oldest tribe in the United States. Woods expressed disappointment over what she described as acts of vandalism, including the disappearance of historic markers and items, as well as the dismantling of the floating pier, which she deemed a competent engineering feat.

Woods criticized the ongoing construction activities, questioning the necessity of undersea drilling and the anticipated costs exceeding one million dollars for repairs to the Riverwalk and Baywalk. She highlighted the historical significance of the land, noting that it serves as an ancient burial ground and battleground, and expressed outrage over the disinterment of Native American remains.

Furthermore, Woods urged the city council to revisit previous plans aimed at protecting these historic lands, condemning the decision to build an apartment complex on sites of historical importance, including the burial grounds of notable figures in U.S. military history. She emphasized the potential for heritage tourism as a valuable economic resource for the city, advocating for a focus on preserving the area's cultural heritage rather than pursuing unnecessary development.

The meeting concluded with the reading of support cards from community members who echoed Woods' sentiments, indicating a shared concern for the preservation of Jacksonville's historical and cultural landmarks.
