Small business owner fights city for sign approval

During a recent city council meeting, community members voiced significant concerns regarding local issues, highlighting the challenges faced by small businesses and the effectiveness of city governance.

Renee Muggeridge, a former city employee and current owner of an alteration and tailoring shop, expressed frustration over the difficulties she has encountered in obtaining a business sign. Since February, Muggeridge has been unable to advertise her business due to bureaucratic hurdles, despite paying $2,000 monthly in rent. She criticized city personnel for directing her to large companies for signage solutions, which she cannot afford. Muggeridge emphasized her right as a citizen to manage her own business and called for more accessible support from the city.

Another speaker, Ron DeLuna, addressed Mayor Quintanilla directly, expressing disappointment in the current administration's handling of district matters. DeLuna, who previously supported the mayor, criticized the creation of district boundaries and questioned the mayor's engagement with the community. He referenced the importance of character over race in leadership and raised concerns about the mayor's travel expenses compared to other council members.
