Fernley sees rapid growth as population surges to 24744

The Fernley Cultural and Tourism Agency is set to review grant applications for the upcoming July to December 2024 cycle, with selections scheduled for June 17, 2024. Applicants are encouraged to attend the meeting at 6:00 p.m. to advocate for their projects, as those without representation may not be considered for funding. Additionally, city hall will be closed on June 19 in observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day.

In other updates, Deputy City Manager Lydia Altic reported on her recent attendance at the Main Street America conference, where she gathered insights to enhance community engagement efforts. A small business survey has been completed, and results will be shared soon. The city has also submitted three requests for Community Project Funding, with one project—modifications to the water treatment plant—advancing to the Department of the Interior for $3 million.

City Engineer Derek Strike provided updates on ongoing street projects, including the annual pavement maintenance affecting Green Valley and Ponderosa subdivisions, and upcoming night work for the Villa Park reconstruction project. Residents are advised to check the city’s website for details on closures and detours.

Councilman Torres highlighted the recent ribbon-cutting ceremony at the All Abilities Park, thanking staff for their contributions. Councilwoman McCain noted that June is National Public Works Month and encouraged community involvement in the upcoming July 4 celebrations, which still require volunteers and sponsorships.

Lastly, it was reported that Fernley is the third fastest-growing city in Nevada, with an 8.1% increase in population over the past three years, bringing the total to nearly 25,000 residents. The next city council meeting is scheduled for July 3, following the cancellation of the June 18 meeting.
