Deputy pursues suspect in high-speed desert chase

In a recent meeting, local law enforcement officials discussed a series of significant incidents and personnel changes within the sheriff's office. One notable event occurred on May 31, when a deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a speeding red utility vehicle on Highway 80. The vehicle fled, leading to a high-speed pursuit that exceeded 70 miles per hour. Due to safety concerns regarding the terrain, the deputy terminated the chase. The suspect vehicle later lost control and crashed in the desert.

Upon investigation, the deputy discovered the driver had fled on foot but was ultimately located unharmed. Two male adults were arrested at the scene, with hydrocodone pills and an open container found in the vehicle. However, there were no signs of intoxication from the driver, as the open container was attributed to a passenger. Both individuals were booked into the Lyon County Jail.

Additionally, the meeting addressed personnel changes within the department. Deputy Steve May, who has served in the area for three years, is transferring to Silver Springs to assist with local law enforcement needs. This change may affect ongoing cases, as responsibilities will be redistributed among other deputies in the squad. The sheriff's office encourages the community to reach out to the new deputies for any follow-up on cases previously handled by Deputy May.
