City moves to tackle cell phone coverage crisis

During a recent government meeting in Grove City, several ordinances and resolutions were discussed, focusing primarily on land use and telecommunications improvements. The agenda included ordinances C2024, C2424, C2524, and resolutions CR2424, CR2524, CR2624, CR2724, and C2624, with unanimous consent for approval.

One significant item was the second reading of ordinance C2024, which pertains to the annexation of 0.897 acres at 2232 Edwards Road in Jackson Township. The property owner requested additional time to address issues related to the property, leading to a motion to postpone the ordinance until August 5, 2024. The council unanimously agreed to this postponement.

Another key discussion revolved around ordinance C2424, aimed at amending regulations concerning special use permits for radio and television antennas. Council member Holt provided insights into ongoing efforts to improve cell phone coverage in areas identified as lacking service, such as White Road and McDowell Road. The city has engaged Arcadia, a consulting firm, to assist in identifying potential sites for new cell towers. Five potential locations have been identified, and the city is moving towards the land acquisition phase.

Holt emphasized the importance of enhancing cell coverage, not only for residents but also for emergency services. The proposed ordinance seeks to streamline the permitting process for antenna installations across all zoning classifications, thereby expediting the deployment of necessary infrastructure to address the coverage gaps.
