Proposed new haul route sparks debate over wildlife impact

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the ongoing challenges faced by Granite Construction regarding its mining operations and haul routes. The company received its mining permit in 2012, which initially included a plan to transport materials through the Oroville wildlife area to its processing facility on Pacific Heights Road. However, this route requires a lease agreement from the Department of Water Resources and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, which has not been secured despite ongoing discussions since the permit was issued.

Due to the lack of a lease agreement and the uncertainty surrounding the original haul route, Granite Construction is now proposing an alternative route. This new plan involves utilizing a more conventional haul route adjacent to Highway 70, which is expected to streamline operations and mitigate potential environmental concerns associated with the previous route through the wildlife area.

The meeting highlighted the importance of securing necessary agreements and adapting operational plans to comply with regulatory requirements, ensuring that both environmental protections and business needs are addressed. Further discussions are anticipated as Granite Construction seeks to finalize its new haul route and move forward with its mining activities.
