Council debates controversial Whitley Springs development proposal

In a recent city council meeting, the Keller council addressed several key items, including the withdrawal of the Chisholm Oaks development application and the approval of various consent items. The council unanimously approved nine consent items, which included agreements for design services related to landscaping improvements, a splash pad project, and the purchase of a new ambulance for the fire department. Additionally, the council adopted the official population figure for Keller, now standing at 47,476 as of January 1, 2024.

The meeting also featured a public hearing regarding the proposed Whitley Springs development, which seeks to rezone a 4.33-acre site from commercial to planned development for residential use. The project aims to create 22 residential lots and three open space lots, with a minimum lot size of 5,000 square feet. The developer emphasized the need for diverse housing options in Keller and proposed a mix of architectural styles, including masonry facades and landscaped areas.

However, the proposal faced significant opposition from local residents. Concerns were raised about increased traffic, particularly on Foxford Street, which some residents believe should be converted into a cul-de-sac to mitigate cut-through traffic. Others expressed worries about the environmental impact of high-density housing, citing issues such as heat retention from impervious surfaces and the loss of green space.

Despite the developer's assurances of community outreach and the potential benefits of the project, the Planning and Zoning Commission had previously recommended denial of the proposal. The council is now tasked with considering the zoning change, weighing the community's concerns against the developer's plans for the area. The outcome of this proposal remains uncertain as the council deliberates on the future of the Whitley Springs development.
