Marin County declares July as Disability Pride Month

In a recent Marin County Board of Supervisors meeting, the board unanimously adopted a resolution proclaiming July 2024 as Disability Pride Month. This initiative aims to celebrate the contributions of individuals with disabilities and promote inclusivity within the community.

Eli Gillardin, CEO of the Marin Center for Independent Living, and Walt Novusardian, a rising junior at San Marin High School and chair of the Marin County Disability Justice Subcommittee, presented compelling remarks highlighting the importance of disability rights and the ongoing challenges faced by disabled individuals. Gillardin reflected on the progress made over the past 40 years in accessibility and inclusion, emphasizing the need for continued advocacy against ableism. He noted the significance of landmark legislation such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the importance of intergenerational support in the disability rights movement.

Novusardian echoed these sentiments, asserting that disability should not be viewed as a burden but as a natural part of the human experience. He called for greater recognition of the rights of disabled individuals, particularly in educational settings, where he noted persistent issues with the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 plans.

The resolution, read by Supervisor Sackett, acknowledged the historical context of the independent living movement and the ongoing need for advocacy to combat discrimination and isolation faced by individuals with disabilities. It encourages the community to celebrate the resilience and contributions of disabled residents across various fields, including arts, science, and education.

The meeting also featured public comments from various stakeholders, including veterans and disability advocates, who underscored the importance of accessibility in all aspects of community life. The board members expressed their commitment to fostering an inclusive environment and recognized the collaborative efforts of county staff and community organizations in advancing disability rights.
