Church seeks approval for controversial columbarium project

In a recent Upper Arlington government meeting, discussions centered around a proposed columbarium and scattering garden at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, which has been a part of the community since its establishment in 1951. The church seeks to expand its ministry by creating a Memorial Park that includes these features, aimed at providing a dignified space for reflection and remembrance.

The proposal includes variances related to signage and the conditional use of the columbarium, which is classified as a cemetery under local zoning laws. The church's representatives emphasized that the columbarium aligns with their mission and has been designed to blend harmoniously with the existing church architecture. The architect, Kurt Miller, detailed the design's compatibility with the neighborhood and the materials used, ensuring a subdued presence that respects the surrounding area.

However, the proposal faced opposition from local residents, including a representative for a nearby property owner who argued that the columbarium's location violates state law, which prohibits cemeteries within 100 yards of a dwelling without consent.
