During a recent city council meeting in Socorro, local leaders expressed gratitude for the support of youth athletes and presented a comprehensive Economic Recovery Strategic Plan aimed at revitalizing the community post-COVID-19.
Coach Mina, representing the Socorro High School athletic program, acknowledged the dedication of student athletes and highlighted the importance of community support in fostering their success. He emphasized the commitment of the coaching staff to prioritize the athletes' achievements over personal recognition, reinforcing the community's role in nurturing local talent.
Following the athletic discussions, Alejandra Valadez, the city development director, introduced a presentation by Ascendo Strategies on the Economic Recovery Strategic Plan. This initiative, funded through American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) dollars, aims to address the unique economic challenges faced by Socorro due to the pandemic. Dr. Gisela Martinez, the lead consultant, outlined the plan's goals, which include fostering a diversified economy, promoting inclusive development, and leveraging the city’s cultural and historical assets for sustainable growth.
The strategic plan, developed over nine months with extensive community input, identifies key areas for economic development, including entrepreneurship and retail. It emphasizes the need to support local businesses and recapture spending that currently flows outside the community. Specific recommendations include enhancing grocery options to address food deserts, expanding restaurant offerings, and promoting clothing stores to boost tourism.
The plan also outlines 32 priority areas for action, categorized into short, medium, and long-term strategies. Immediate actions focus on supporting existing businesses and increasing access to capital, while medium-term goals include launching a business incubator and establishing a revolving loan fund. Long-term objectives aim to support youth programming in financial literacy and entrepreneurship, ensuring future generations are equipped to contribute to the local economy.
The council is set to vote on the adoption of the strategic plan, which represents a significant step towards economic recovery and community resilience in Socorro.
