Carlsbad declares support for LGBT rights and gun violence awareness

In a recent city council meeting in Carlsbad, California, officials took significant steps to promote inclusivity and safety within the community. The council unanimously adopted a proclamation recognizing the rainbow flag as a symbol of hope and unity for the LGBT community. This gesture aims to foster an environment where discrimination against LGBT individuals is not tolerated, reinforcing the message that being gay should be celebrated rather than merely tolerated. The proclamation was accepted by the North County LGBTQ Resource Center, highlighting Carlsbad as a welcoming place for LGBT families and individuals.

During the meeting, Mayor Keith Blackburn also proclaimed the first Friday in June 2024 as National Gun Violence Awareness Day. This initiative seeks to honor victims and survivors of gun violence, emphasizing the need for increased awareness and preventive measures within the community. The mayor noted that over 120 people are killed by gun violence daily in the U.S., and urged residents to participate by wearing orange on the designated day to symbolize their commitment to reducing gun violence.
