Burlington leaders tackle urgent school safety concerns

In a recent government meeting, Burlington officials focused on enhancing school safety amid rising concerns about gun violence and local safety issues. The discussions highlighted the importance of trauma-informed practices in ensuring student safety while addressing the psychological impacts of safety measures.

Councilor McKnight emphasized the alarming statistics surrounding gun violence, noting it as the leading cause of death for children in the U.S. She advocated for collaborative efforts to prevent school-related gun violence, particularly through initiatives like Vermont's Be Smart program, which promotes secure gun storage and provides free gun locks to families. McKnight expressed a desire for the school board to engage in discussions about disseminating these resources effectively.

Concerns were also raised about safety in the vicinity of Burlington Technical School and Burlington High School, particularly regarding the presence of drug-related activities and other safety hazards. Councilor Litwin shared alarming accounts from local school staff about finding needles and other dangerous items near school grounds.
