During a recent government meeting, city officials discussed the conceptual plan for the Reconnecting Bank and Cherry project, seeking approval to advance to the permitting phase. City Engineer Laura Wheelock and Public Works Engineer Julia Sacchi presented updates following extensive community engagement since their last presentation in June. The project aims to enhance the streetscape with green stormwater infrastructure, new trees, and pedestrian-friendly lighting, while also addressing safety concerns.
Councillors expressed support for the project, highlighting the importance of improving downtown vibrancy and safety. Councillor Bergman emphasized the need for updated planning that includes features like public safety kiosks and public restrooms, which have garnered interest from funding partners. However, the project faces challenges regarding the flexibility of changes, particularly concerning parking and street design, as federal funding stipulations could complicate modifications.
Director Spencer clarified that while minor adjustments could be made during the design phase, significant changes might jeopardize funding. The discussion underscored the need for a comprehensive transportation plan to guide future decisions, as the last update was in 2011 and did not account for current community needs.
The meeting concluded with a commitment from city officials to continue engaging with the community and funding partners to refine the project while adhering to federal guidelines. The approval of the conceptual plan is seen as a crucial step towards revitalizing the downtown area and enhancing public safety.
