Bethlehem prepares for UNESCO recognition ceremony

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the upcoming international recognition event for a site recently inscribed by UNESCO, which took place on July 26 in New Delhi. The event, set to occur in Bethlehem, will feature a presentation of a certificate of inscription to Mayor Reynolds, with other sites potentially receiving their certificates during the ceremony or at separate events.

The meeting highlighted the importance of this recognition, as it marks a significant step in the UNESCO process. Following the inscription, the site is required to implement both an international management plan and a local management plan, ensuring proper stewardship and promotion of the site.

Additionally, the council is seeking increased funding to support World Heritage initiatives. Stephanie Ajeelo, a key figure in the efforts, outlined the anticipated expenses, which include hosting international partners during the October inscription event, maintaining contracts with advisors, and funding marketing and educational efforts related to the World Heritage site.

The meeting concluded with a reminder of an upcoming press conference scheduled for August 7, where further details about the inscription and related activities will be shared. The council expressed gratitude for the support received thus far and emphasized the collaborative effort required to promote and manage the newly recognized site effectively.
