In a recent meeting of the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), interim chair Rosanna Rosado provided a comprehensive update on the state’s public safety initiatives following the enactment of the state budget in April. The budget includes record investments aimed at enhancing public safety and supporting law enforcement agencies across New York.
Rosado highlighted that over $127 million has been allocated for law enforcement technology and equipment, benefiting 378 agencies outside of New York City. Additionally, more than $35 million is designated to bolster police and prosecution efforts against domestic violence, marking a significant commitment to addressing this critical issue. The funding aims to implement comprehensive strategies to save lives and hold offenders accountable.
Another key focus of the budget is the allocation of $50 million to combat organized retail theft through enhanced crime analysis and collaboration between law enforcement and businesses. This initiative seeks to build on existing crime intelligence resources and strengthen partnerships to identify theft trends.
Rosado also emphasized the continuation of gun violence prevention efforts, noting a 35% reduction in shootings this year compared to the five-year average. These initiatives include the GIVE initiative, the crime analysis center network, and community outreach programs.
The meeting underscored DCJS's commitment to adapting to the evolving needs of communities while promoting trust in the justice system. Rosado expressed her eagerness to keep stakeholders informed about ongoing efforts and progress in public safety initiatives.
