Residents demand urgent healthcare and emergency services reform

Residents of Bernstahl Lakes are voicing urgent concerns regarding healthcare access and emergency services in their community. During a recent government meeting, the chairman of the Bernstahl Corridor Coalition, representing 13 communities along Bernstahl Road, highlighted significant challenges faced by local residents.

The chairman noted that the ongoing reevaluation of the Bernstor Area Plan, initiated by the Charlotte County Board of Commissioners, is critical for addressing these issues. He emphasized the lack of healthcare options, stating that he must travel 14 miles to see a doctor, a situation that has become increasingly dire since Hurricane Ian, which exacerbated existing problems.

Emergency services were also a focal point of his remarks. He pointed out that the local fire station, staffed by only five paramedics, struggles to respond effectively to calls. The chairman expressed frustration over the prioritization of emergency calls, where minor incidents can delay responses to critical situations, such as cardiac arrests.

The coalition has been actively communicating these concerns to county staff for the past two years, underscoring the need for immediate action to improve healthcare and emergency response in the Bernstahl Lakes area. As discussions continue around the area plan, residents hope their voices will lead to meaningful changes that enhance community safety and health services.
