In a recent government meeting, discussions centered around a large-scale development plan for a site in Des Moines, which includes two parcels of land. The proposal, presented by developer Steve Christiansen and Robert Kramer, aims to create an event center with adequate parking while preserving open space along East 46th Street.
The developers explained that the site is currently under construction, and while the building footprint is established, the design alternative being requested pertains solely to the location of additional parking, not the number of spots. The developers emphasized the importance of maintaining open space for potential future expansions of the church currently utilizing the site.
Christiansen highlighted the unique shape of the property, which is bordered by trees, allowing for outdoor events such as weddings. The plan includes a detention pond that will feature a fountain and green space, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the area. The developers believe this layout will benefit both the church and the surrounding neighborhood.
However, concerns were raised by community member Carol Maher regarding the removal of trees during construction and the reduction of the setback from 150 feet to 26 feet. Maher expressed disappointment that the building has not yet been constructed and urged the city to consider more environmentally friendly options for the parking area, such as permeable pavers.
The meeting concluded with a call for further community input, as the proposal moves forward in the planning process. The developers remain optimistic about the project, which they believe will serve the community's needs while maintaining a balance with the natural landscape.
