Firefighters honored for lifesaving heroics in cardiac emergencies

In a recent government meeting, first responders were honored for their exceptional life-saving efforts during multiple emergency calls throughout the year. The ceremony highlighted the bravery and skill of firefighters and paramedics who responded to critical incidents, showcasing their commitment to public safety.

Among the notable cases discussed was a cardiac arrest incident on January 1, 2023, where Station 15's team successfully revived a patient who had gone into cardiac arrest. Following established protocols, the crew delivered defibrillation and achieved return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) after four shocks. The patient was subsequently transported to Saint Lehi Medical Center, where they received timely balloon angioplasty and stent placement, resulting in a discharge on January 8, neurologically intact.

Recognition was given to several first responders for their roles in this and other emergencies. Firefighter paramedic Rosa Gonzalez received a bronze star, while others, including firefighter EMT John Koffing and firefighter paramedic Bernie Navarez, were awarded various honors for their contributions.

Another significant incident occurred on January 25, 2023, when Engine 16 and Medic 16 responded to a report of an unconscious patient. The team quickly initiated CPR and utilized a Lucas CPR device, achieving ROSC within minutes. The patient was later discharged from the hospital without any deficits.

The meeting also acknowledged a cardiac arrest response on January 30, where the team successfully revived an unconscious female patient after 17 minutes of care. Firefighter paramedic Nick Balestra received a silver star for his efforts in this case.

The final case recognized involved a cardiac arrest on November 28, 2023, where the crew provided critical care and achieved ROSC after 18 minutes. Firefighter paramedic Dylan Nancic was awarded a gold star for his exemplary service during this incident.

The ceremony concluded with a heartfelt congratulations to all honorees, emphasizing the importance of their work in saving lives and the community's gratitude for their dedication.
