Community rallies for full day kindergarten in Council Rock

During a recent Council Rock School District meeting, community members passionately advocated for the implementation of full-day kindergarten, highlighting its educational benefits and the competitive edge it could provide for the district.

Lynn Goldman, a resident of Wrightstown Township, emphasized the importance of strong public education, citing research that shows full-day kindergarten programs significantly enhance children's learning experiences. She noted that students in full-day programs receive 30% more reading instruction and 46% more math instruction compared to their peers in half-day programs. Goldman argued that investing in full-day kindergarten not only benefits children but also enhances property values in the community, making it an essential consideration for all residents, regardless of whether they have school-age children.

Cara Moore, a special education kindergarten teacher, shared her firsthand experience with both half-day and full-day programs. She highlighted that full-day kindergarten allows for more individualized instruction and social-emotional learning opportunities, which are crucial for child development. Moore urged the district to prioritize the needs of all students by adopting a full-day program.

Barry Moore, a Northampton Township resident, pointed out that Council Rock is among the few districts in Bucks County without a full-day kindergarten option, placing it in the bottom 13% statewide. He expressed gratitude to the school board for exploring this initiative and called for a united effort to support the transition to full-day kindergarten.

Elizabeth Thompson, a parent and resident of Upper Makefield, acknowledged the extensive research supporting full-day kindergarten and its positive impact on academic performance. She reassured attendees that the initial costs of implementing the program would be covered by existing educational funds, resulting in minimal tax implications for residents.
