City faces staffing crisis as budget cuts impact operations

During a recent government meeting, discussions centered on staffing and budgetary concerns within the Highway Department, particularly regarding the management of four key positions. A notable point raised was the historical budget decrease for these roles, which has dropped from $410,000 in FY 23 to $404,000 in the current budget, attributed in part to a clerical error from the previous year.

Eric Wiseman, the director of operations, explained that the reduction in budget is linked to the retirement of a long-tenured employee, resulting in the hiring of less experienced staff. This transition has led to a decrease in overall salaries for these positions. Wiseman noted that while it is unfortunate to lose seasoned expertise, the department has promoted internally, with a licensed electrician stepping up to a foreman role.

The meeting also addressed the vacancy of the fleet manager position, which has been open since late April. Wiseman confirmed that the position was posted shortly after the vacancy arose and that the department is currently in the second round of interviews, aiming to extend an offer soon.

Overall, the discussions highlighted the challenges of maintaining experienced personnel while managing budget constraints, as well as the ongoing efforts to fill critical roles within the department.
