New director vows to enhance veteran services in Somerville

In a recent government meeting, Jerome Thomas, the newly appointed director of Somerville's veteran services, emphasized the importance of outreach and support for veterans navigating the complexities of the VA system. Thomas, a Marine veteran himself, shared personal experiences that shaped his commitment to improving veteran services, particularly highlighting the challenges faced by his wife, an Army veteran, in accessing benefits.

During the discussion, Thomas outlined his department's mission to prioritize veterans' needs through advocacy and engagement, aiming to create a respectful and supportive environment for those who have served. He noted that the department's budget for FY 24 allocated $410,000 for veterans' benefits, but only $176,710 had been spent, raising concerns about the effectiveness of outreach efforts.

Councilor Ewan Kampen expressed support for Thomas's initiatives and stressed the need for better communication with veterans in the community to ensure they receive the benefits they are entitled to. Thomas acknowledged the importance of community engagement and pledged to enhance outreach efforts, collaborating with other city departments to connect with veterans on a personal level.

The meeting also touched on upcoming discussions regarding library services, with Kathy Pantagini, the director of public libraries, and other library representatives set to present their plans for FY 25. The focus on veteran services and library support reflects the city's commitment to addressing the needs of its residents, particularly those who have served in the military.
