Residents rally against controversial expansion at retirement community

Residents of the Saratoga Retirement Community (SRC) voiced strong opposition to a proposed expansion plan during a recent city council meeting, raising concerns about its potential impact on their quality of life and the community's character. Bob Berglund, a long-time resident, emphasized that while change is often necessary, the current proposal for a 52-unit expansion does not align with the needs or desires of the existing community. John Day, another resident, provided a financial perspective, noting that SRC has been a significant economic asset for the Odd Fellows and the city, generating over $31 million in the past decade. He pointed out that the facility's operating income remains strong, suggesting that further expansion is unnecessary and could jeopardize its financial stability. Day referenced a failed expansion at another Odd Fellows facility, warning that the same fate could befall SRC if the current proposal is approved.

The residents are calling on the city council to consider their rights and the long-term implications of the proposed changes, advocating for a compromise that respects the community's needs and preserves the character of Saratoga. The council's decision on the matter remains pending, as residents await a resolution that balances growth with the preservation of their cherished living environment.
