Somerville secures vital funding to expand homeless health care

In a recent government meeting, officials highlighted the ongoing success of a health care clinic for the homeless, located at the engagement center, which has been operational for over a year. The clinic, currently funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), is set to lose its funding in September. However, the Somerville Homeless Coalition has secured a significant two-year grant from the RISE Foundation, ensuring the continuation of essential health services beyond the funding deadline.

City officials expressed their pride in the coalition's swift action to obtain the grant, emphasizing the importance of expanding health care services for the homeless population. Additionally, they discussed the weekly city huddle, which involves various city departments and nonprofit partners addressing homelessness issues. As summer approaches, the city is preparing to manage encampments in local parks, establishing clear protocols for support and communication.

The huddle has proven beneficial for both city staff and nonprofit organizations, facilitating better coordination in addressing the needs of unhoused residents. The city is also enhancing its 311 service workflows to ensure timely information sharing among partners, particularly with the Somerville Homeless Coalition, which has established relationships with those in need.
