Calexico community rallies to support families after devastating fire

A recent government meeting highlighted significant community efforts following a devastating structure fire in Calexico that destroyed four homes and displaced 18 residents. The fire, which occurred on May 24 behind McDonald's on Gender Alley, prompted a swift response from local fire departments and social services, including the Red Cross, which provided immediate relief to affected families.

City officials expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts that included temporary housing arrangements, meals, and clothing donations from various organizations, including the Rotary Club and local businesses. Notably, a donation of $6,000 was secured to assist three families with their first month's rent and deposits, ensuring they would not face homelessness.

In addition to addressing the fire's aftermath, the meeting celebrated local achievements, including the Calexico Little League's championship victories and the Calexico Unified School District's accreditation for its adult education program. The council also discussed ongoing projects, such as the Calexico Intermodal Transportation Center, which is set to break ground in two months, and the expansion of micro transit services to meet growing demand.

Furthermore, the Imperial County Transportation Commission (ICTC) reported on the completion of the entry bridge widening project, aimed at improving transportation experiences for both pedestrians and vehicles. However, it was noted that the free transit fares currently in place would conclude at the end of the month.
