Historic home restoration plan gains unanimous approval

In a recent government meeting, the board approved a variance request for a carport extension at a property on the east side, maintaining a setback of 2 feet 10 inches, which is less than the required 5-foot setback. The motion for approval was made by Mr. Venoz and seconded by Mr. Maxwell, resulting in an 8-0 vote with one abstention from Miss Rolando, who cited a lack of information on the case.

The meeting also addressed a significant application for a special certificate of appropriateness concerning the property at 1115 Obispo Avenue, located within the Obispo Avenue Historic District. The property, designed by architect George Fink in 1924, is recognized as a contributing resource to the district and was designated a Coral Gables cottage in 1997.

The proposed renovations include two one-story additions to the residence, which will replace later infill additions that altered the home's original design. The modifications aim to restore the property’s historic integrity, including the reconstruction of a bell tower feature that had been lost over time. The architect, Rebecca Carballo, emphasized the importance of returning the home to its original aesthetic while incorporating modern comforts.

The board's staff recommended approval of the project, noting that the proposed changes are compatible with the historic character of the property. The meeting concluded with a positive outlook on the preservation efforts for this historic site, reflecting the community's commitment to maintaining its architectural heritage.
