South Main Street study reveals urgent safety concerns

The government meeting commenced with a change in the agenda, prioritizing the presentation of the draft South Main Street corridor study. Papa West introduced the study, which stems from the 2019 comprehensive transportation plan aimed at enhancing safety and access management along the corridor. The study, authorized last year, was conducted in partnership with Stantec Consulting, which provided engineering expertise and facilitated public engagement.

West emphasized that the study is a high-level technical analysis rather than a definitive plan, indicating that further site analysis and engineering work would be necessary if recommendations are adopted. He noted that cost considerations might also influence future adjustments to the recommendations.

Mike Rutkowski from Stantec Consulting presented the findings, highlighting the corridor's significant safety concerns, with crash rates nearly double the state average in certain areas. The presentation included stakeholder collaboration details, key recommendations, and potential cost implications for proposed projects. The corridor spans 2.3 miles from US 1 Capital to NC 98, and the team expressed gratitude for public participation in the study process.

The meeting underscored the importance of addressing safety issues along the South Main Street corridor and set the stage for future discussions on integrating the study's findings into the comprehensive transportation plan.
