City Council Approves Historic Battlefield Land Purchase

In a recent government meeting, the council approved a significant subgrant agreement with the American Battlefield Trust to purchase approximately 31 acres of land off AgriPark Drive, a site pivotal to the start of the Stones River battle. This acquisition, funded through a National Park Service grant, will allow the land to be incorporated into the city’s parks and recreation system following state regulatory actions. Notably, the grant does not require a federal match.

Additionally, the council approved a contract with Trane US Incorporated for the purchase of HVAC equipment for the new Murfreesboro Water Resource Administration Building, totaling $98,763. This investment is aimed at replacing an outdated HVAC system to ensure better maintenance of the facility.

The meeting also included several board and commission appointments, all recommended by the mayor, which were unanimously approved by the council. A special event beer permit for the Murfreesboro Little Theatre was granted, meeting all city code requirements.

As the meeting concluded, members acknowledged the upcoming Fourth of July celebrations, which will feature a performance by Craig Campbell and a fireworks display funded by Middle Tennessee Electric. The event is set to take place at The Fountains, with entertainment starting at 5 PM and fireworks at 9 PM.

The meeting marked a bittersweet moment as council member Craig expressed gratitude for his time in office, hinting at his departure. His contributions over the past six years were recognized, and he was humorously dubbed \"honorary staff\" by his colleagues. The council plans to hold a workshop on July 11 and a council meeting on July 18, with a reminder of David Ives' retirement party scheduled for the following day.
