A groundbreaking residential community aimed at individuals with developmental disabilities is set to be proposed, featuring a mix of affordable housing, job training facilities, and recreational amenities. The project, which encompasses 63 acres, will include 160 housing units, comprising one and two-unit villas, four-plexes, and 16-unit condominiums, with plans for a future 60-unit assisted living facility.
During a recent government meeting, project representatives highlighted the community's design, which emphasizes accessibility and connectivity for bike and pedestrian traffic along East Arjun Parkway. The development will also feature a significant amount of open space, exceeding the requirements of the Planned Development District (PDD), with 31% dedicated to open areas and at least 11% designated as active open space.
The initiative is particularly significant given the current waiting list of 9,000 individuals in South Carolina needing residential services for developmental disabilities. Bill Lensecombe, a key figure behind the project, emphasized its potential as a model for similar developments across the state, addressing the urgent need for housing solutions for families with adult children who have disabilities.
The community will not only provide housing but also a job training center aimed at fostering independence among residents. This aspect of the project is designed to support individuals in gaining employment and integrating into the community, thereby enhancing their quality of life.
The proposal is currently under review, with the next steps involving recommendations to the city council and subsequent site development permits. The project's advocates express optimism about its approval, citing strong community support and the potential for it to serve as a national example of inclusive living for individuals with developmental disabilities.
