School Board Celebrates Juneteenth and Honors Retiring Educators

The Snoqualmie Valley School District Board of Directors convened on June 13, 2024, with all directors present, to discuss several key items, including the approval of the agenda and minutes from previous meetings. The board unanimously approved an amended agenda that moved the consent agenda behind item 4.01 and also approved the minutes from the May meetings.

A significant highlight of the meeting was the reading of a proclamation from Governor Jay Inslee recognizing June 19, 2024, as Juneteenth in Washington. The proclamation emphasized the historical importance of Juneteenth as a celebration of the end of slavery in the United States and called for community observance of the holiday. The board also acknowledged June as National Pride Month and celebrated the achievements of the boys' soccer team, who were recognized as WIAA state champions.

The meeting included a heartfelt recognition of retirees from the district, with several educators honored for their years of service. Notable retirees included Susan von Kaplan, who dedicated 16 years to Timber Ridge, and Joyce, who served for 31 years in the district. The board expressed gratitude for their contributions to education and encouraged them to return as substitute teachers.

Public comments were limited, with one individual canceling their appearance and nine written comments submitted to the board, which were acknowledged and reviewed.

The meeting concluded with a presentation from the middle and high school science teams regarding a proposed curriculum option for middle school chemistry, indicating ongoing efforts to enhance educational offerings within the district.
