In a recent government meeting held on July 8th, officials discussed the ongoing expansion of Trent University, which has been acquiring properties in the Woodhills addition to address the increasing demand for student housing and parking. The university's growth has outpaced its existing parking infrastructure, prompting the need for new developments.
The proposed project aims to utilize vacant university-owned properties to create additional parking spaces and improve campus accessibility. The development plan includes the construction of two new parking lots, an enclosed trash receptacle for a residence hall, and enhancements to an existing gravel parking lot. The project will span three designated areas, with a total of 288 new parking spaces planned.
Area 1, located at the corner of Summit and Saginaw Streets, will feature 44 parking spaces with dual entry and exit drives. Area 2, which includes a mix of existing gravel and asphalt lots, will provide 125 designated parking spaces, with a new northern lot containing 96 spaces and a southern lot downsizing to 23 spaces. Area 3 will enhance pathways along Saginaw Street, improving connectivity across the campus.
The university has successfully navigated the approval process, receiving necessary variances and amendments to proceed with the project. The planning commission is set to review Phase 2 of the dormitory development on August 12th.
City staff expressed strong support for the initiative, highlighting its alignment with community objectives to develop underutilized lots and bolster Trent University as a vital community partner. The meeting concluded with an invitation for public input, although no comments were made from attendees.
