City Council Faces Crucial Decision on Development Extension

In a recent city council meeting, officials discussed the potential for a 12-month extension or termination of Special Land Use Permit (SLUP) 22-001, originally approved in May 2022 for a mixed-use development in Tucker. The ordinance, which is undergoing its first reading, reflects changes in city code that now require public hearings for extensions beyond the initial 12 months.

The SLUP allows for the construction of up to 409 multifamily units on a 13-acre site, alongside office, retail, and restaurant spaces. However, the project has not yet progressed to the land development or construction phases. The current extension granted by the community development director pushes the deadline to May 9, 2024.

Dan Webb, representing the developer Resia, emphasized the company's commitment to the project and the challenges posed by rising inflation and construction costs. He noted that the market conditions have made it difficult to move forward, but Resia remains optimistic about the site and is seeking to maintain the status quo for another year.

Webb argued that denying the extension would not benefit the city and could harm the developer's interests. The council is expected to make a decision on the extension or termination at the next reading scheduled for July 8. The outcome will determine whether the developer can continue to pursue the project under the existing SLUP or if they will need to start the application process anew.
