New overnight park enforcement aims to curb crime

During a recent government meeting, discussions centered on the implementation of a new overnight enforcement shift for park regulations, set to operate from 11 PM to 7 AM. This initiative aims to address issues related to park safety and compliance, particularly after hours when parks are officially closed.

Officials noted that last year, a total of 468 citations were issued in parks, primarily for violations such as sleeping in parks after hours, alcohol-related offenses, and possession of drug paraphernalia. The new overnight shift is expected to target similar violations, enhancing enforcement during the late-night hours when such activities are more prevalent.

While the positions for this overnight shift have been allocated and training for personnel is underway, the enforcement has not yet commenced. The funding for these positions is being covered by the parks department, indicating a commitment to improving safety and compliance in public spaces.

Councilor Moreno expressed appreciation for the comprehensive presentation provided during the meeting, highlighting the wide scope of initiatives being undertaken by the department. The discussions reflect a proactive approach to managing park safety and addressing community concerns regarding after-hours activities.
