City of McKinney proclaims Juneteenth National Independence Day

The McKinney City Council convened on June 4, 2024, in council chambers to conduct its regular meeting, beginning with an invocation led by Deputy Chief Jimmy Thomas of the McKinney Police Department, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

A significant highlight of the meeting was the proclamation of June 19, 2024, as Juneteenth National Independence Day in McKinney. Mayor George Fuller delivered the proclamation, which acknowledged the historical significance of Juneteenth, marking the day in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans in Texas learned of their emancipation. The proclamation emphasized the importance of recognizing this day as a celebration of freedom and justice, encouraging residents to participate in the upcoming festivities scheduled for June 15 at Finch Park.

The meeting also included a segment for public comments, where residents were invited to voice their opinions on agenda items and general concerns. A total of seven comments were anticipated, reflecting community engagement in local governance.
