Chapel Hill gears up for European soccer showdown

In a recent government meeting, Chapel Hill officials celebrated local achievements and discussed upcoming events that promise to boost community engagement and tourism. Council member Stegman opened the session with congratulations to high school seniors graduating this month, particularly acknowledging those who navigated their education during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Public participation was encouraged, with the council inviting community members to voice their concerns or present petitions. Laura Policelli, the tourism director for Chapel Hill and Orange County, provided an update on the area's tourism growth, reporting a 12% increase in visitors over the past year, totaling approximately 2.5 million. Policelli highlighted the upcoming European soccer match on June 23, featuring Celtic and Manchester City, which is expected to draw a crowd of 50,000 to Kenan Stadium. To facilitate transportation for attendees, a free trolley service will operate from July 22 to 24, running between Chapel Hill and Carrboro.

Additionally, Policelli announced a casting call for extras in the popular Amazon series \"The Summer I Turned Pretty,\" which will film in the area in early July. The council expressed enthusiasm for these developments, emphasizing the importance of community support for local businesses during these events.

The meeting also addressed procedural matters, including the recusal of council member Miller Fushi from voting on specific funding items due to her employment with the Inter-Faith Council. The council successfully passed several motions, including the adoption of the 2024-2025 Community Development Block Grant annual action plan and the Human Services Agency's funding plan.
