Seattle Public Library battles ransomware attack recovery efforts

During a recent government meeting, updates were provided regarding the Seattle Public Library's response to a ransomware attack that occurred over Memorial Day weekend. Chief Librarian Tom Fay reported that the library has been collaborating with specialists and law enforcement, including the FBI, to investigate the incident and secure its network.

The attack has raised concerns about potential data compromise, and while the library is working diligently to restore services, the investigation process is ongoing. Fay noted that similar incidents have affected other library systems, which have taken over a year to fully recover. The Seattle Public Library (SPL) is committed to informing patrons about any personal information that may have been affected, as legally permissible.

Despite the challenges posed by the attack, SPL has managed to keep its central library and branches open, providing access to physical materials and restoring critical services such as e-material lending. Additional services, including access to library accounts and public Wi-Fi, are expected to be reinstated in the coming weeks.
