Waco honors first responders for heroic river rescue

In a recent city council meeting, Waco Mayor Jim Owens presented the Achievement of Excellence Award to City Secretary Michelle Hicks, recognizing her office's adherence to municipal standards. To qualify for this prestigious award, a municipal clerk's office must meet nine out of twelve rigorous standards. Mayor Owens praised Hicks for her significant contributions to local government and highlighted her leadership roles within the Texas Municipal Clerks Association, including her recent selection as the chapter's Clerk of the Year for 2023.

The meeting also featured a proclamation declaring June 18, 2024, as \"Teamwork Saves a Life Day\" in Waco. This recognition honors the bravery of local first responders who successfully rescued a person in distress from the Brazos River on May 30, 2024. Mayor Owens commended the collaborative efforts of the Waco Police and Fire Departments, emphasizing the critical nature of their work in the community.

Additionally, the council proclaimed June 17-21, 2024, as Waste and Recycling Workers Week, led by Solid Waste Director Cody Patel. The mayor acknowledged the importance of waste management in public health and environmental sustainability, urging citizens to appreciate the efforts of solid waste employees.
