Summerfest introduces scholarships to empower local students

As Summerfest approaches, scheduled for July 11th through 14th in East Milwaukee, significant updates regarding the event's management and community impact were shared during a recent government meeting.

The event, which has been a staple in the community for 18 years, faced challenges in its financial management in the past. However, this year marks a turning point, as the Eastern Maine Development Corporation (EMDC) has stepped in as a fiscal sponsor, ensuring that funds are handled responsibly. This change has brought a sense of reassurance to East Monaca residents regarding the event's financial integrity.

In a notable development, the event's organizers have introduced a scholarship program aimed at supporting local students. For the first time, scholarships totaling $4,500 have been awarded to seniors from local high schools, including $1,500 to a Stearns senior and $500 each to four Skagen seniors, along with another $1,500 to a Catahdin senior. This initiative reflects a commitment to fostering educational opportunities within the community and enhancing the event's role as a fundraising platform.

The meeting underscored the importance of collaboration and effective management in revitalizing Summerfest, positioning it not only as a celebration but also as a meaningful contributor to local education and community development.
