Billboard debate heats up as village considers removal

In a recent government meeting, trustees engaged in a heated discussion regarding the future of an electronic billboard located at 22100 West Euclid Avenue. The billboard, which was initially intended to generate revenue for the now-closed racetrack, has become a point of contention among local officials.

Trustee Dunnington expressed strong support for the billboard's removal, citing its deteriorating condition and the absence of the racetrack as a significant reason for its discontinuation. He noted that the billboard, which currently advertises Arlington International, is missing a letter and is nearing the end of its operational lifespan, having been in place for approximately seven years. Dunnington characterized billboards as \"eyesores\" and argued that there is no longer a benefit to the community from its presence.

Conversely, other trustees, including Trustee Bertucci, advocated for extending the billboard's term for another year, emphasizing the need for a partnership with the current owner and suggesting that a reevaluation of its value should take place in the future. Trustee Grassi supported this approach, highlighting the importance of repairing the billboard while maintaining a good faith relationship with its owner.

The discussion culminated in a motion by Trustee Bertucci to approve the extension of the billboard's sign variation, which was seconded by Trustee Stringbeck. The board is expected to consider the necessary repairs and the billboard's future in the coming year, reflecting a balance between community aesthetics and economic interests.
