Power Outages Strike Downtown Network Amid Cable Failures

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the significant power outages that affected the downtown network on June 13 and June 17. The first outage was triggered by a fault in an underground cable, which caused damage to adjacent cables. This initial incident resulted in a limited number of customers losing power. However, the situation escalated when a critical piece of equipment known as the bus tie at the Veil substation failed, forcing the manual de-energization of the downtown network to prevent further damage. Quick repairs were made, and power was restored later that evening.

On June 17, a separate cable fault occurred, impacting different areas and leading to additional outages, including parts of Chinatown. This incident also caused damage to adjacent cables, resulting in a more extensive outage that took longer to resolve. Power was not fully restored until June 21, highlighting the challenges faced by the utility in managing the downtown network's infrastructure.

Officials emphasized the need for ongoing assessments and improvements to prevent future occurrences, as the combination of equipment failures and cable faults significantly disrupted service in the area.
