Vancouver champions pollinators with community initiatives

During a recent Vancouver Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission meeting, Chair Jamie Haygood highlighted the significance of pollinators and the community efforts to support them. In a speech honoring a pollinator proclamation, Haygood recognized several local organizations and individuals for their contributions to promoting pollinator education and habitat enhancement.

Kyle Rosalind from the Vancouver Bee Project was commended for his ongoing educational initiatives that raise awareness about the importance of bees. Additionally, Haley Heath from the Nature Spaces program has been instrumental in coordinating volunteer efforts to plant native flora throughout the city. The Clark Conservation District was acknowledged for providing affordable native plant species, while Clark Public Utilities showcased their pollinator gardens, which serve as hands-on learning environments for residents interested in creating pollinator-friendly landscapes.

Clark College received praise for its designation as a Bee Campus USA, with thriving pollinator and butterfly gardens enhancing the local environment. Haygood also expressed gratitude to homeowners and businesses that have adopted environmentally friendly practices, such as using alternatives to insecticides and planting native species.

In closing, Haygood urged the city council to continue their support for pollinator initiatives, emphasizing the collective responsibility of the community to foster biodiversity.
