Community pushes for safer bike pathways in new projects

During a recent government meeting, officials expressed optimism regarding the approval of infrastructure projects, with one already greenlit and hopes for another within the next six months. The discussion centered on three key projects aimed at enhancing local transportation and connectivity.

The first project highlighted was the 18th Street Underpass, which is set to replace the existing bridge over 18th Street. Advocates urged for the design to incorporate bicycle facilities to promote safer cycling options in the area.

Next, the proposed improvements along 6th Avenue were discussed. Officials recommended the inclusion of a pathway that would connect the existing powerhouse canal pathway with the William O. Douglas Trail, enhancing accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists between Hathaway and Willow.

The third project mentioned was the East 8th Street extension, part of a broader east-west corridor initiative. There were calls for a separated pathway along H Street to facilitate connections to both the Greenway pathway to the east and the powerhouse canal pathway to the west. This recommendation aims to improve safety and usability for cyclists in the region.

Additionally, a question was raised regarding funding for the Natchez River Trolley Bridge repair, which has received financial support through a surface transportation block grant. However, there was a request for clarification on the status of a second block grant intended for green safety paint at pathway crossings, which was not included in the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP).

The meeting underscored the community's commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructure and safety, particularly for cyclists, as officials continue to seek funding and approvals for these vital projects.
