Yakima launches innovative pollinator garden project

In a recent government meeting, Yakima officials announced a collaborative initiative to establish a pollinator garden at West Valley Community Park, spearheaded by the local Rotaract club. The project aims to enhance local biodiversity and educate the community about the importance of pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, which are vital for agriculture. The garden will be designed by Emily Hammett, the Yakima Heritage Garden Coordinator, and will be funded through Rotary's grant resources.

The proposed site for the garden is a less frequented area on the north side of Wide Hollow Creek, allowing for a 16 by 16-foot garden space that will include a walkway for public access. An educational sign will accompany the garden to inform visitors about its significance and the role of pollinators in the ecosystem.

Additionally, the council approved a resolution to enter a memorandum of understanding with the Merriman House Domestic Violence Center in Maryland. This agreement will facilitate the implementation of a new version of the domestic violence lethality assessment program, which aims to improve data analysis and support for victims. The program, which has been in place for nearly five years, will utilize leftover grant funds to cover the first year of subscription costs, with plans for continued funding in subsequent years.

The meeting concluded with the approval of a lease agreement with Grace City Outreach for the Camp Hope operation, further demonstrating the city's commitment to community support and development.
