County Advocate Calls for Leadership Change Amid Controversial Contracts

During a recent county council meeting, public advocate Arnie AC Dinoff raised concerns regarding the leadership of Mayor Dave Zucker, particularly in light of Zucker's previous electoral defeat in Darden Prairie attributed to mismanagement. Dinoff emphasized the importance of maintaining library branches in the growing county and called for new leadership in the district, specifically targeting Jason Kuhl, whom he accused of exploiting the community through excessive pay raises.

Dinoff also acknowledged a generous furniture donation from Presiding Judge Chris McDonough, valued at $1,500, following the closure of his private practice. However, he expressed frustration over a $579,000 contract for consultant services to update the airport master plan, questioning the necessity of hiring external consultants when such responsibilities should fall to the airport's existing staff. He highlighted a second contract for $320,000 awarded to the same consulting firm, raising the total to nearly $900,000, which he deemed excessive given the airport's vulnerability to flooding.

In addition, Dinoff criticized the county's communication director, Kevin Killeen, for his salary of $135,471, which he considered exorbitant for someone in the position for only nine months. He also pointed out a $125.52 charge for document retrieval from the county's lobbyist, Mike Gibbons, as unreasonable.

The meeting also included discussions on the consent agenda, where council members voted to approve various items while pulling two for further discussion. One council member expressed support for a $5.8 million project, noting the need for stormwater improvements in his district, suggesting that such infrastructure investments might provide greater community benefits than recreational projects like splash pads.

The meeting underscored ongoing concerns about fiscal responsibility and effective governance within the county, as officials navigate community needs and budgetary constraints.
