California confronts extreme heat crisis with urgent action plan

Over the past decade, the state has recorded an average of more than 5,000 emergency department visits due to extreme heat, with an estimated 60 deaths annually attributed to heat-related illnesses—a figure believed to be significantly underestimated. Projections indicate that by 2050, heat waves could lead to over 11,000 deaths per year in California alone, according to the state's fourth climate change assessment.
