Residents voice concerns over traffic chaos from bike lanes

During a recent city council meeting, significant concerns were raised regarding traffic management and the effectiveness of bike lanes in the community. Council members and residents expressed skepticism about the proposed measures aimed at calming traffic, citing a lack of supporting studies and surveys.

One resident highlighted that Second Street, the second busiest road in town, is crucial for daily commuters and is expected to experience increased congestion due to the anticipated population growth linked to the arrival of Samsung. The resident warned that without proper planning, traffic could spill into residential areas, creating further complications for local residents.

Concerns were also voiced about the current road improvements, which engineers indicated would only be effective for six to seven years before requiring further updates. Suggestions included lowering the speed limit on Second Street to enhance safety and reduce traffic issues.

Another resident, Monica Savala, addressed the council regarding the bike lanes implemented in the area. While she acknowledged the benefits of cycling, she pointed out that the bike lanes have seen minimal usage, with only one to two cyclists observed daily on her block. Savala argued that the lanes have not slowed down traffic as intended, with delivery vehicles often using them to navigate around congestion.

The discussions underscored a growing need for comprehensive traffic studies and a reevaluation of current infrastructure plans to better accommodate the community's needs as it continues to grow.
