Fowler Packing seeks funding amid labor lawsuit fallout

In a recent government meeting, the Greater Modesto Chamber of Commerce received approval for funding amounting to $408,606, with the motion passing with a majority vote. Notably, Rebecca Bettencourt abstained from the vote, while all other members expressed their support.

The meeting also featured a proposal from Fowler Packing Company Inc., which is seeking $93,288 to train 169 workers at its two locations in Fresno County. Bridal Saul, the vice president of human resources for Fowler Packing, expressed gratitude for the consideration of their application and acknowledged the assistance received in the process.

However, the discussion surrounding Fowler Packing was not without controversy. It was noted that in October 2016, approximately 20,500 seasonal agricultural workers filed a class action lawsuit against the company and a farm labor contractor, alleging violations of various state and federal labor laws between March 2011 and January 2019. This context raises questions about the company's labor practices as it seeks further funding for worker training.

The meeting concluded without public comments, and the panel moved forward with the agenda, indicating a focus on supporting local businesses while also addressing ongoing labor issues within the agricultural sector.
