During a recent government meeting, Dr. Coleman, Chief Operating Officer of Prince George's County Public Schools, presented a comprehensive update on the district's Transportation Action Plan, addressing ongoing challenges in student transportation. Joined by Kiva Baldwin, the Director of Transportation, Dr. Coleman outlined the findings of a transportation audit commissioned by Superintendent House as part of his initial 90-day plan.
The audit, conducted by Formative, a national student transportation strategy firm, began in September 2023 and concluded with a final report in January 2024. The audit revealed significant inefficiencies, noting that approximately 20% of bus trips were unassigned due to staff vacancies and ineffective operational processes. Key issues identified included imbalanced bell times, a high number of early bus departures, and an overcommitment to assigned bus stops. These factors have contributed to late arrivals and difficulties in tracking bus locations, complicating communication with families.
In response to these findings, Dr. Coleman introduced five prioritized recommendations aimed at enhancing the efficiency and reliability of student transportation. The proposed changes are set to be implemented in the upcoming 2024-2025 school year, with the goal of improving on-time arrivals, ensuring transportation safety, and enhancing communication with families.
The administration is optimistic that these measures will significantly improve the overall student transportation experience, ensuring that students receive safe and punctual transport to and from school.
