The recent Juneteenth celebration held at the Albany Civic Center on June 14, 2024, attracted approximately 1,500 attendees, marking a successful event aimed at honoring the historical significance of Juneteenth. The festivities, which ran from 4 PM to 7 PM, included a variety of educational and social activities designed to promote unity and reflection among community members.
Activities at the event featured bouncy houses, a gaming truck, and bingo with prizes, alongside artistic contributions from three local artists, including an Albany State University (ASU) student. The art was curated by the Albany Museum of Art, showcasing local talent. Additionally, a blood drive was conducted, resulting in the donation of nine pints of blood.
The event also hosted 13 to 14 vendors and provided a photo backdrop for attendees. DJ Maurice Bell served as the host, while a joint proclamation was read by the Daugherty County Chairman and the Mayor, which included historical insights about Juneteenth. Notable performances included a narration by a member of the Ruth Harris Freedom Singers and a local dance performance by the Southwest Georgia Dance Academy. The main musical act was the local band Ear Candy, with additional performances by Larry Mallory and the band Essence.
Overall, the event not only celebrated Juneteenth but also fostered community engagement and highlighted local culture through art and performance.
