Mesquite celebrates surge in tourism during solar rodeo

In a recent government meeting, Jabin Gonzales, manager of Visit Mesquite, provided an extensive quarterly update on the city's economic development initiatives, highlighting the success of the recent Solar Rodeo event held from April 6 to 8. The event attracted approximately 43,000 visitors from both out-of-state and international locations, significantly boosting local tourism and hotel occupancy rates. Gonzales noted that the peak hotel occupancy occurred on Saturday, with a notable increase in average daily rates leading to a spike in hotel revenue on Sunday.

The marketing efforts surrounding the Solar Rodeo were robust, utilizing social media to generate over one million paid impressions. This strategy not only increased visitor engagement but also resulted in a substantial rise in social media followers, indicating a successful outreach to both locals and visitors.

Gonzales also reported that from January to March, Mesquite saw a 20% year-over-year increase in overnight visitors, totaling around 113,000, with an estimated visitor spending potential of $57 million. The city has secured a five-year agreement with the Texas Cornhole League to host events at the convention center, further diversifying its event offerings.

Kim Buckram, the director of economic development, followed with updates on downtown development initiatives, including a new downtown overlay currently in the final editing stage. Buckram emphasized the city's commitment to supporting local businesses, having assisted over 80 businesses in the past three months. The downtown farmer's market, which opened on April 6, has also seen significant growth, attracting over 40 vendors.

Overall, the meeting underscored Mesquite's strategic focus on enhancing tourism, supporting local businesses, and fostering community engagement through events and marketing initiatives. The city aims to build on the momentum generated by the Solar Rodeo and continue its trajectory of economic growth.
